Hardware firewall devices
As names go, you can't get more straightforward than Tiny Hardware Firewall ($65, direct), but don't be deceived by this handheld box's diminutive appearance. A small, pocket-sized network router, THF provides firewall protection and secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) connectivity wherever you go. At $65, the Belisarius model I reviewed is worth every penny for its ease of use and security. I heartily recommend THF as an Editors' Choice, and it should be part of the network security toolkit for anyone who gets online outside of the home or office.
Whenever you are on the Internet, you need to take precautions so that eavesdroppers can't intercept your data and activity as you surf online. I highly recommend using a free VPN service or, if you want more features, a paid VPN service when on public networks to encrypt your activity. However, VPN doesn't do anything about all the potential bad things trying to compromise your device. For that, you need a firewall so that only legitimate traffic gets to go in and out of your device while the malicious—or suspicious—traffic is kept out.
